UK T-Mobile Vario firmware ROM update

T-Mobile UK has finally released the new AKU2 firmware ROM update for its MDA Vario Windows Mobile smartphones (and MDA Compact and MDA Pro). It’s about time!

The update enables push email for business users who’s employers run the latest Microsoft Exchange server (Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 or later). However, A2DP = stereo audio over bluetooth is not included in this update. It seems getting stereo sound to transmit over Bluetooth is a really difficult challenge.

The update also fixes a number of bugs in the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. And trust me, I can say, after a few months of using/cursing my Vario, there were a lot (!) of bugs.

Hopefully it all works like a charm now with the update. We shall see. People in various online forums seem to be happy with the fixes.

Get the update from the T-Mobile site. Do it now.

(Getting back to Day 4: Education)

    Date: September 3, 2028

“Hi Johnny, so how was your first day at school?”
“It was pretty cool Mom and pretty funny too.”
“Want to tell me about it, but make it quick, I still have to get to some meetings at work and have to fly to China tomorrow, so I won’t see you for about three weeks. But I’m really interested.”
“We met our new classroom teacher today, she said her name was Annie, she looked pretty cool, all silver and red in color, with a 50 inch screen, I think she was a Mac OS 18 X. She must really be smart since she knew all of our names and a whole bunch of other stuff about all of us, she also knew everything about you and Dad. Wow, some stuff I didn’t even know. All of us kids had our own workstations with our own Micro communicators and she could talk to everybody and one at a time, it was pretty cool.”
“So what did you learn today?”
“Gee, I don’t know. I tried a little of a lot of things and it got pretty boring. Annie let us do whatever we wanted, whatever we liked and found interesting. Freddie, the nerd, worked on a lot of math, I guess he really likes that stuff, yuck! I read a little, English was boring and I didn’t do too good at that. So I browsed the web a lot and played some games. Annie, said my hand/eye coordination was very good. Once, all of us did have to take a math test, moan, but everybody got 100% right. There were twenty questions and if we got the answer wrong Annie would help us until we got it right. It was pretty funny, most of us were doing about five questions at once and got it all wrong and Annie overloaded and crashed. From the Principal’s office, we can’t go in there, all of the windows are black, came a message that Annie needs to reboot. A bunch of us decided to make Annie crash again tomorrow by asking an many questions as we can, just for fun.”
“Now Johnny, is that really very nice?”
    “What’s to eat Mom?”
“I didn’t have time to cook Johnny, so just pop a pre-fixed dinner in the microwave and don’t stay up too late, no more than three hours in front of the computer. I’ve got to (beep) run now, (beep) your father should be home (beep) in two days. I’m glad to hear that you’re doing so well in school, love you (beep).”
    “Bye Mom.”

I’m happy to report, after a few weeks of living with the update, that the smartphone is much improved. It hasn’t crashed once, whereas previously it would crash every day. The alarm clock also works reliably now. Phone reception and voice quality if also better. Speakers seem louder, as well. Windows Mobile 5 is now actually (finally) shaping up to be something very good and useable.

Now if only missing sync would hurry up and release their software for synchronizing this thing with a Mac!

All…the new T-Mobile MDA Pro upgrade (UNI_TMUK_130114_130232_11003_WWE_BL101_Ship.exe)do have the A2DP or stereo over Bluetooth option…and it works…well sort of it does cut out frequently, I’m using it with the Motorola HT820 but I’m hoping to purchase the superior Plantronics Pulsar 590A. I’m hoping this headphone will make a difference if not to the cutting out (which is annoying) the sound quality. As for the upgrade it has made the phone a little more stable.
